Thiess is the world’s largest supplier of outsourced coal mining services. Thiess mining accounts for about 40f Thiess’s annual turnover.

Our fleet of mining and construction plant is one of the largest and most diversified in all of Australasia. Worldwide, we mine more than 110 million tonnes of coal and 8 million tonnes of ore every year, and each year our mining operations move more than 540 million bank cubic meter of overburden. We also design, build and operate coal preparation plants and are currently washing/processing about 90 Mt of coal every year.

We develop, construct and operate a number of coal and metalliferous mines in Australia and Indonesia for mining majors like BHP Billiton, Peabody and Xstrata. Recently we have been awarded an 18 month contract for initial pioneering and mine establishment works along with mining of early ore and waste in the Solomon Iron Ore project of the Fortescue Metal Group in West Australia.The work will establish the Solomon area for long term mining operations.The Solomon Mine is required to start producing iron ore in 2012 and is expected to ramp up to 60 Mtpa by June 2013.Thiess’ ability to quickly mobilise highly skilled people and appropriate equipment was central to the company’s success.  Thiess is now well positioned to undertake further works on the mine development and the main services contract which commences inapproximately 12 months.

Thiess Minecs India Pvt. Ltd. (90wned subsidiary of Thiess) has been recently awarded a project by one of India’s Maharatnas, NTPC Limited (NTPC) to develop, construct & operate a 15 MTPA Coal Mining Project at Pakri Barwadih. The Pakri Barwadih Block is located in North Karnapura Coalfields in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state. The block has been allotted to NTPC Ltd for captive mining for supply of coal to their super thermal power stations.Ministry of Environment and Forests, GOI has already granted environment clearance to the project for the production capacity of 15 MTPA of coal.  Similarly, Forest department has accorded Stage II clearance for the project. The Thiess Minecs scope in the PakriBarwadih projectinvolves the construction and/ or operation of the following facilities in addition to operating the mine for its entire life of 25 years.

a)   A 3000 TPH Coal Handling Plant capable of storing 400,000 tonne of crushed coal (-50 MM) and despatching the coal through a series of overland conveyors which will be constructed by NTPC.

b)   Mine Infrastructure including,world class Heavy earth-moving equipment workshops, stockyards for various types of spares and consumables, offices, welfare amenities, diesel storage & dispensing systems, bulk explosive plants, and associated installations worth Rs 500 crores.

c)   A 13 Km long overland conveyor network and Rapid loading system discharging into Indian Railways System to be constructed by NTPC.

d) A self-contained residential colony to house the Managers, Engineers and Staff required to constructoperateand maintain the above facilities.

e)   All utilities required for the construction and operation of the above.

Current Status

Chitarpur Project

Thiess has completed mine planning & design to extract 120 Mt@6.75Mtpanotwithstanding the complex geology and difficult geo mining conditions of this deposit, and discussions are on-going to conclude the mining contract.

Abhijeet Mining is undertaking land acquisition and statutory approvals for the expansion, and is also constructing a modern coal handling plant, residential township etc.

Pakri Barwadih Project

At the present time, Thiess Minecs has completed the mine planning and design as per industry best practices, and has submitted a Revised Mine Plan and Project Layout to NTPC, which will not only ramp up the coal production to the ultimate capacity of 15 Mtpa, but will also facilitate NTPC and Thiess to expedite the development of this major project.

While NTPC is engaged in land acquisition and Resettlement & Rehabilitation of the Project affected persons, Thiess Minecs is implementing its own community engagement and development strategy and carrying out the engineering of the fixed Infrastructure facilities.

Enabling work for the project is in the progress and financial closure will be activated shortly. Organizational capability building is in progress and strong experienced and dedicated team is already working in Kolkata, Barkagaon/ Hazaribagh to develop this project.

To attract and retain the best people to develop and operate the Pakri Barwadih project, Thiess Minecs offer staff members(all officers & selected supervisors) the option of staying in suitable bachelor accommodation in the proposed Thiess Minecs camp at PakriBarwadih, while their family members can stay in Ranchi (Jharkhand’s capital) or Hazaribagh (District /Town).Thiess Minecs will provide a complimentary staff bus to transport the staff members to and from central places in these towns to the Thiess Project camp/mine. Suitable rosters and work schedule will be developed to facilitate this arrangement in the interest of the Project.
